Empowering Women Through Education

If you’re a regular reader, you know that I have founded a new company, Expedition Subsahara. If you have never read a single blog in its entirety before, this should be the one you choose to read. There’s something great in store, and I don’t want anyone to miss out.

Expedition Subsahara started out a desire to do something bigger than myself and, at the same time, bring some of my African roots here to America. Over several months, it grew into more than that. The idea blossomed into a plan and has grown into something so much more. My business partner Rosebell and my goal is to translate beautiful home decor and accessories into a school for young women in Africa. We launched an e-commerce site with handcrafted African items in October and now, with land selected for the school, we have launched a Kickstarter campaign to secure the funds to push us through that first phase of this plan. Kickstarter is all or nothing — no contingencies. If you don’t meet your goal, no funding. The Kickstarter goal is $75,000.

The plan is to build a school in Senegal with two hubs: graphic/visual arts and technology/computer science. When the women complete their programs, we will help them find jobs through partnerships with businesses close to Senegal. Crowd sourced funds will be used to build the school proceeds from the handcrafted jewelry, handbags and home decor will help operate it in the future.

We believe in working hard for the things you want in life. And let me tell you guys something, I have never wanted anything more, ever. I have an offer that will be tough to pass up and I’m hoping will help spread the word about the campaign.

For a $1,000 donation to Expedition Subsahara on Kickstarter, I will give soon-to-be married couples a $5,000 wedding collection from Sofi Seck Photography. You guys, this is unheard of. This offer maxes out at 10 couples, who will receive nine hours of wedding day coverage, two amazing photographers, digital downloads of all edited wedding photos, a 25-page wedding photobook, and fierce wedding photos from an experienced photographer.* Sofi Seck Photography has photographed more than 400 weddings over the past eight years.

Perhaps best of all, you’ll know that you helped build a school for young women in Africa who don’t have the same opportunities as women here in America. There are so many young women in Africa who aren’t afforded the opportunity to attend school or who have less schooling than they need to succeed in a modern society. In Senegal, people believe that to succeed, you have to leave Senegal. And in fact, that’s why many, many young people leave their homes in Africa — to try to get a better education. We want to change that.

Not Getting Married in 2018? You can still help! Donate, like and share the campaign. Share, Share, Share! We’re down to fewer than 30 days and every little bit helps.
